A Dry Year

After hurricane Isaac ended its rain a few days ago, and after the last few days of showers it may not seem that Missouri needs water. In the contrary most of Missouri is still in what the National Weather Service considers an exceptional drought, one of the worst rating you can be in. As we roll through day 149 of the drought it is crucial to ask what has this done, or will do to our economy?
Experts predict that food prices will rise about three percent due to the lack of corn. Bean prices as well as rice are expected to increase as well. This year the overall corn yield in Missouri dropped 41%, causing many farmers to lose thousands of dollars.
Besides from vegetables, cow farmers are also hurting. With their fields unable to support their cows from the lack of rain, many were forced to sell their cows at a loss of about 200 dollars a head.
All this will not only hurt the farmers, it will also hurt checkbooks all over the country. So next time it rains don’t curse mother nature, be grateful because that rain just may be saving you some money in the future.
