00:00:12 Owen Weiss: Welcome back to Clayton News Network. I’m your host, Owen Weiss, and we are back for episode two.
00:00:17 Owen Weiss: Our first story tonight happened a little bit ago on Oct. 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. Central Daylight Time. So, as many of you know, a car drove through Barnes and Noble on the third. Two people were injured. One person died. The car drove through the window to the right of the entrance of the door. The driver is cooperating with the authorities, and Barnes and Noble had to board up their windows and close for a while, but they’re back open now. A Reddit user witnessed the accident and said that the driver was pulling out in reverse, but wasn’t moving because they were in drive and were hitting the curb. So they gave it more gas when it launched forward into the bookstore. It is asked that anyone with any details about this tragic accident contact the Ladue Police Department at 314-737-4600. The identities of those involved have not yet been released. We at Clayton News Network wish those injured a speedy recovery and send our condolences to the family who lost one of their own.
00:01:24 Owen Weiss: Another top story tonight happened for us on September thirtieth at around 11:01 p m Central Daylight Time, but technically happened at 12:01 because that’s the time in Washington, D.C. when it happened. So, as many of you know, the government shutdown happened, and I’m sure many people have questions like, What is a government shutdown? How and when did it start? Are they something to worry about, and what happens during one? Well, I’m here to answer all your questions. So starting with number one, what is a government shutdown? Well, it occurs when Congress fails to pass or the president refuses to sign a spending bill to fund the federal government’s operations. This results in a funding gap that can cause several governmental functions to be temporarily disrupted. Now, when did it start? So the twenty-twenty-five US government shutdown began at 11:01 p.m. Central Standard Time on
00:02:25 Owen Weiss: Tuesday, September thirtieth. And how did it start? Well, it was the result of a disagreement on government spending and health insurance. Are they something to worry about? That is a great question. And not really. At least not yet. As it continues on, it may get worse, but as of right now, it’s not going to really impact you directly. Mostly just federal jobs. You might notice some delays at the airport, though. And what happens during one? Well, during a government shutdown, essential services related to national security and public safety, like inpatient and emergency medical care, air traffic control, law enforcement, border security, disaster aid, and power grid maintenance continue, though they may face disruptions. But then there are also some less important jobs that may be defunded temporarily or just not happen.
00:03:26 Owen Weiss: Finally, our last story for tonight is that all forty-eight hostages from Gaza were released on Oct. 8, 2025. That is a truly amazing thing, and it is amazing to see all their families reunited. And it really is just awesome
00:03:47 Owen Weiss: And also on a totally new note, how are some ways you can stay safe this Halloween? Because it’s a common concern, like, ‘ Am I going to be attacked while I’m out trick-or-treating with my two-year-old cousin or something? ‘ Yeah, I don’t know. That really depends on what you’re doing. But here are some ways you can try to stay a little extra safe. So number one, travel in groups. Strength in numbers. Who’s going to kidnap ten random teenagers? I don’t know, but that’s probably not the smartest person ever. Another thing you could do is have a cell phone or a communication device. Even a walkie-talkie. It could be like a fun game where you, like, check in with your mom on your walkie-talkie every minute. I don’t know, that’s very frequent. Maybe not every minute, but. Yeah. Check your candy for little blades because that happens. That’s not just fake stuff. And also, this is very important. Only eat candy if it’s in its original packaging. If you see any rips or tears, throw it out. Burn it, I don’t know. Give it to your enemy.
00:04:52 Owen Weiss: But also, if it comes in, like a random plastic bag that doesn’t have any branding on it. Besides, like the Ziploc logo, you might not want to eat it because you don’t know if someone tampered with it or didn’t wash their hands before they put it in the bag. Just, when in doubt, throw it away. Only go to houses with the porch lights on. This is a very common one. I feel like this is the number one Halloween rule. Like if their porch lights are not on and they don’t have any Halloween decorations, then stay away. They do not want you there. If you do find yourself there, then it’s too late. You’re done. I’m kidding. I just don’t know. Don’t do that. Yeah, the number one rule is don’t go to houses that don’t have lights on. And the number one trick is that the more decorations a house has, the better the candy. If you want those king-sized candy bars, go to that one house that always has like eight hundred blow-ups in their front yard; they have the best candy, one hundred percent guaranteed.
00:05:51 Owen Weiss: If you feel in danger, like if you went to a house that had all its lights off, or you find a blade in your candy. Call an adult. But if things escalate, like if you get kidnapped, call 911. That’s a pretty unspoken rule of thumb that you should just know. Like if something bad is happening and you’re getting kidnapped, call nine one one. Or if you see something bad happening and it’s not even happening to you, call 911 unless it’s not a serious situation. For example, if someone took a bowl of candy from the ‘please take one’ bowl, so you don’t have to call 911 for that. But yeah, don’t go to that house because they won’t have candy anymore. Also, be a respectful and courteous person and don’t take more than one when it says please take one. Even as tempting as it may be, just do everyone a solid and don’t. That is pretty much it for Clayton News Network today. So do not forget to leave a comment on your favorite type of candy because mine’s Twix, personally. But apparently, people like Twizzlers. Like, that’s just red plastic. That’s basically it. Give us a five-star rating. Make sure to follow Clayton News Network. And yeah, have a great week, you guys. Bye.
