Hey, what’s up guys? It’s Jon Craig back here with the Weekly Spin.
This will be episode three of the podcast. And today I’m going to be talking about all the new music that released on Halloween this year and all some backstories on the on the albums and stuff.
Remember, if you like this episode, make sure to follow and rate the podcast and share it with a friend. All right, let’s get into it.
A little context. I will not be doing a full review on each of the albums and stuff that I talk about in this podcast, that I don’t want to make it 30 minutes long. I’ll just do a quick recap of my thoughts.
So the first album we will be talking about is Offset’s Haunted by Fame. This is Offset’s fifth album in his discography, and personally I have been a fan of Offset’s. That’s also not including his albums with Migos, who he’s a part of.
Personally, this was the first thing I listened to as soon as I saw it drop. I do love Offset. I think he’s a great artist. He.
It’s a pretty short album. It’s only 23 minutes long, 11 songs. So about like two minutes per song. But he definitely fit a lot of good content into those 11 songs.
My favorite song on here was the intro song, which was “Free Pick.” It’s only a minute and 30s long, but it’s a great song. It’s got really high energy. He’s got some super fast flows. He starts the album off on a very high note.
There are some other tracks I could highlight here. I think the second track, “Haunted by Fame,” was definitely an interesting back like second track to “Free Pick.” It was much more mellow. It was usually when songs are the same name as the album title, it’s the best song in the album. I don’t think that personally, but I think it was a great song. It was very chill, laid back. He did have a very spooky sound on this album, which I think is what he was going for. And that makes sense on Halloween.
Offset does have a history of dropping albums slash songs on Halloween. In 2017, he dropped his duo album with 21 Savage and Metro or trio album actually, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin, called Without Warning, which is highly regarded as probably the best Halloween album, um, and probably the best like album in his discography, although he has grown very much in his discography. So yeah, he’s definitely got a trend of dropping stuff on Halloween. I think he’s starting to become known for that.
And yeah, that’s my thoughts on Haunted by Fame.
The next album that I will be talking about is Kodak Black with Just Getting Started. Personally, I have not listened to this entire album. I have. I’ve listened to a decent amount of it. It’s it’s quite long. It’s 20 songs an hour and four minutes. It’s almost. Or it’s about triple the amount of Haunted by Fame.
And personally, I’ve never been a huge Kodak Black fan. I think his voice is just not for me. I think it’s like kind of ratchet and same thoughts on this album. To be honest. I didn’t love this album. It was like just the sound, wasn’t there. I think all a lot of the songs were very repetitive. Same same sound, same flows, all that stuff.
I do think the features on this album like very heavily carried this album. There was a Chance the Rapper feature, a Pharrell feature, a Gunna feature, a Lil Yachty feature, a Don Toliver feature, and a Tucked in Rain feature. And those on all of those songs, um, the feature artist heavily outshined Kodak Black, which is never a good thing for the main artist.
And personally, my favorite track on this album was “Shooting Craps,” which was the song featuring Lil Yachty. And again, I don’t think any song on this album is much higher than an eight out of ten. But I think this song, Lil Yachty, really just hard carried this song. He his verse was so much better than Kodak Black’s. He just took away with the song. He did not turn back as soon as he started his verse.
And yeah, that’s my thoughts on this album.
The next album I’ll be talking about is not technically a new album or anything, but it is the 25th anniversary edition of Stankonia by Outkast. And I’ve never talked about it on this podcast before, but I am a very big fan of Outkast. I think they’re like the best rap group of all time.
This 25th anniversary edition slash deluxe of the album, it didn’t bring anything much new. I think it brought a yeah, it brought a bunch of like, remixes to songs and then one new song. So nothing, nothing like not much new material.
It was, I didn’t listen to all the remixes. But the one new song that was on the deluxe I did listen to. It’s called “Speed Balling.” It’s just a fun song. I mean, I’m pretty sure you can tell like that Andre and Big Boi are just having fun on this song. It’s a very, just silly song. Like they’re kind of just saying “speed balling” over and over again. And some other people might think it’s a serious song. I that’s fine. I’m just sharing my opinion on it.
So yeah, not much to talk about with this album, but again, Outkast is great. Can’t not say this album is great.
The next song I’ll be talking about, which is the first non-album that I’ll be talking about, is Ken Carson with. “Yes.” He dropped this on Halloween. Of course.
It’s a single. It’s something like three minutes and 30s long. It’s a pretty, pretty good song. I think it’s a very Ken Carson song. Like, not much different than what you’d expect from a Ken Carson single. It sounds it’s got the it’s got the trap beat. It’s got the, like, repetitive sound to it. It’s got a pretty good flow. It’s kind of. Carson’s got a good voice.
And yeah, not much to talk about on this album or single. Sorry. And I think it’s a nice little touch to drop it on Halloween, and not much more that I can say than that.
And the last thing I’ll be talking about today is Ken Carson or not Ken Carson. This is a little bit more underground. I personally have listened to this artist Artists for a little while. And it’s Kenji.
He is? Yeah, he’s definitely underground. He’s got 382,000 monthly listeners, which is not much compared to all the other people I’ve talked about in here. All the other people have got like at least 20 or 30 million.
So he dropped a single on Halloween called “I Do.” I didn’t personally hear any Halloween influence on this song, which is something I expect from a Halloween drop. But I did love this song. I think it very well fit Kenji’s sound and vibe, and he slid well on the beat. And it’s a it’s a great song. Not much more I can say than that. Kenji is very underrated. I would recommend checking him out if you. If you listen to this. He’s got a lot of good albums.
And yeah, that was most of the, hip hop and rap drops that I listened to on Halloween and I thought were good.
And yeah, that’s the end of episode three. If you enjoyed this episode, remember to follow rate the podcast with a friend. And thanks for listening. I’ll see you guys with episode four.
