Running a New Idea

Do you need more P.E. credits? Looking for a fun way to get them? Clayton High School is offering two new P.E. courses next year: 5K/Triathlon Training and Crossfit.

In order to decide what new classes to start, the P.E. department teachers went through a process to figure out which classes would be most effective.

“We started by looking at our current curriculum and starting asking students what they would like to see.  After all of our research, we thought these two new course fit into our ideas of Fitness For Life,” said Melissa Hobick.

Through this process, one of the courses chosen was a 5K/Triathlon Training class. This class involves training in how to prepare for and run 5K’s, and how to train for a triathlon. Students enrolled would use indoor and outdoor tracks, spinning bikes, the indoor pool, and Shaw Park. Taking it involves a requirement of running 2 5K’s throughout the semester class, and ends with a triathlon.

On the other hand, if running isn’t really your thing, there’s another new option: Crossfit. Crossfit offers all sorts of different workouts, involving aerobics, anaerobics, strength training, and plyometric training.  Instead of focusing on one specific type of exercise, Crossfit involves a “Workout of the Day” (WOD) tactic to provide fitness for all students. The class will be varied and intense, so if you’re planning on taking Crossfit, prepare yourself for high- intensity workout!

In with the new, out with the old- yes, two current classes will be discontinued as of next year. One of the Team Sports courses will be eliminated, and Aquatic Fitness will no longer be offered.

No room in your schedule next year?  Don’t worry- these new classes aren’t going anywhere.

“We will see what kind of response we get, but they should be permanent courses,” said Hobick. Both classes are semester classes: 5K/Triathlon Training is offered both 1st and 2nd semester, and Crossfit is offered 2nd.

Each course will be ¼ of a credit, just like every other P.E. class. Students can sign up for 5K/Triathlon Training and Crossfit when they sign up for the rest of their classes for the 2013-2014 school year. Still undecided?  For more information, students can contact their counselors or anyone in the P.E./Health department. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a fun class, get in shape, and inaugurate a new class at CHS!
