Early Wednesday evening the School District of Clayton affirmed that there would be school on Thursday, Feb. 3, through its Facebook Page sparking a backlash of student comments in protest and complaint.

Imagine what a miracle it would have been for Clayton students if the School District of Clayton had canceled school this past Thursday that would have allowed for a historic three-day snow break.

However, for many students, it came as a surprise to discover that the School District posted early Wednesday evening on its Facebook Page that there would be school on Thursday stating that “Clayton schools WILL BE OPEN and IN SESSION on Thursday, Feb. 3.  Stay warm and drive safely!” Yet, over the course of the night, students were not afraid to post comments on the District’s page in protest of the decision to have school.  Comments from students flooded in and quickly filled the page.

To respond to the overwhelming student comments, the School District re-posted its original guidelines for commenting from Feb. 2010 on the District’s Facebook page to reaffirm the expectations it has for people who choose to use the page to communicate in the following message:

We welcome your comments as a means of sharing your own experiences, suggesting improvements or chiming in on the conversation. To keep our page focused, we have set some comment guidelines.

1. This page is moderated and all comments are reviewed by the School District of Clayton Office of Communications.

2. To ensure exchanges that are informative, respectful of diverse viewpoints and lawful, we will not allow comments that are:

– Off Topic. We will delete comments not related to the subject of the page entries.

– Regarding District personnel. This is not the appropriate forum to discuss District personnel. If you would like to do so, please contact your building principal.

– Spam. Comments focused on selling a product or service will not be posted.

– Personal Attacks. If you disagree with a post, we’d like to hear from you. We do ask that you refrain from personal attacks or being disrespectful of others.

– Illegal. Laws that govern use of copyrights, trade secrets, etc., will be followed.

– Language. Comments including but not limited to: profane or provocative language, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive or derogatory content, threats, obscene or sexually explicit language will be deleted.
