Rally to Restore Coach Horrell

Students walk from Clayton High School to Gay Field as part of the peaceful rally to protest Coach Horrell's dismissal.

During today’s third period, hundreds of students from all grades participated in an organized Walk-Out to protest the dismissal of Coach Horrell from the position of Football Coach.

Several of our photographers were on the scene to document the respectful rally. Go through the pictures below to see some first-hand footage of the event.

Coach Horrell told the crowd gathered on Friday: “I’m very humbled, thankful, I love you guys.”

For other coverage of the event, please check out KSDK’s story about the rally and a St. Louis Post Dispatch story that was in Saturday’s paper.

On 4/20/11 I was in a meeting and was verbally told by a school board rep that there are not formal evaluations on administrators. This was before the incident with Coach Horrell. I will be in a meeting again on 5/25/11 and will ask for clarification.

I sit on a committee and I was told verbally by a school board member, on April 20, 2011 that there is no formal evaluation of administrators.

Just for clarification: Clayton Administrators are evaluated on a regular basis.

An administrator from an adjoining school district that have middle school students share their high school campus called MSHSAA today and he was informed that MSHSAA is having an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss Clayton’s situation. I believe the Clayton athletic director did not research the rules before dismissing Coach Horrell. How could he if the state association is meeting tomorrow? This is a sad commentary on his integrity and leadership.

    Dear Globe Staff:
Having served on the operations committee for the Center of Clayton when it first opened, I am aware that our biggest concern was always student safety. We recommended high-tech camera systems, separate locker rooms, and close monitoring of the Center by the high school staff and the Clayton Parks and Recreation staff. An ongoing issue we constantly discussed was when the middle school students using the Center facilities after school. Because middle school students are members, they have access to the facility, including the fitness areas. Mr. Horrell had an obligation like any other adult staff member to supervise Clayton students, regardless of their age. If MHSAA rules prohibited Mr. Horrell’s actions, then the CHS Administration should have sought out MHSAA support to remedy the situation. This facility is a 50-50, jointly-owned facility, and having district policies and MSHSAA rules come in conflict serves no purpose. Consequently, my hope is that the principal and Mr. Bone sought clarification of this issue before reacting. Moreover, if this was not a single incident, as Mr. Tennil was quoted as saying, did they inform Mr. Horrell and their other coaches about the other incidents?

I am sure the students, community, and your staff will continue to ask clarifying questions, and I would hope that the administration used all their resources before taking such a drastic measure. Finally, as a proud retired teacher and coach of this outstanding school, I am saddened and disappointed when a coach who was doing his job and working to support students, was fired.

There are NO EVALUATIONS for any administrator in the district! I sit on a committee that has raised this issue several times this school year. Bone isn’t the only administrator needing to be evaluated.

A source close to the situation has overheard your principal say, “Mr. Bone hasn’t been evaluated in years.” What does this say about accountability within the school? How can a school hold a coach accountable when the administrator in charge of the coaches isn’t evaluated.

Thank you for your coverage of this event. I think Mr. Horrell’s direct supervisor should be interviewed. It is my understanding that students and parent surveys are used within teacher and principals evaluations. But, Mr. Bone who is paid over $100,000 per year, has not had this part of his evaluation. In addition, he has not been formally evaluated in years. How can we know he is properly supervising his coaches if he is not evaluated like other professionals in the school district?
