On January 4, 2015 the world said goodbye to one of the world’s influential sports anchors ever to grace the set of a news program.  Stuart Scott, age 49 lost a battle with appendix cancer.

Scott was made famous through his use of phrases such as, “Booyah!”, “Cool as the other side of the pillow.”, and “He must be the bus driver cause he is taking them to school!” while announcing highlights.  However, Scott was not only upbeat and friendly on camera, he developed personal relationships with many players and sports casters.

Fellow ESPN co-worker Mike Greenberg said that while attending the Super Bowl with his wife and daughter Niki, Scott saw them and immediately got on his hands and knees and began playing with his daughter.  Greenberg says that his picture of Scott playing with Niki is his favorite baby picture he has of his daughter.

Scott’s final major appearance was at the 2014 ESPYs in which he was nominated for the Jim Valvano Perseverance award.  In his speech he famously proclaimed, “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, while you live and the manner in which you live.”  This was Scott’s final major appearance and as always left all viewers in shock.

Scott was a man who endured great obstacles in life and always saw the positives.  Through Scott’s definition of how you beat cancer, we can be confident that Scott beat cancer and inspired many others to beat cancer with him.
