Unique Halloween Costumes

Everyone is well versed in the traditional Halloween costumes like a witch, a ghost or a vampire. However, it’s also fun to see the unique, eye-catching or sometimes witty costumes that people come up with through the years.

“I started around 7th or 8th grade,” Senior Matt Mikesic said. “I made myself a movie theater floor. I stuck candy wrappers and stuff to my shirt. After the theater floor, I went as Dr. Pepper and my brother drew some poorly figured peppers on my lab coat. Last year I got really into pun costumes after Dr. Pepper. Last year I was killing time. So I got a giant clock like “Flava Flav” and just some old plastic watches and “TIME Magazine” and shredded it up posted it on different parts of the shirt. I used fake blood and stuck some fake knives in it. So, I literally killed time.”

Other costumes are unique because they have elements of humor and are unusual.

“My Grandma used to make my costumes for me, but in 5th grade I was a plant cell,” Senior David Mayer said. “I made a costume out of a box. It’s pretty much just progressed from there. One year I dressed up as a superhero that I dubbed ‘Cannon Fodder’ and I wore a black helmet and I had a bulls-eye on my chest.”

Although, the creativity does not stop there. There will be plenty more eye-catching and punny homemade costumes to come.

“I’ve been looking online for some other pun ideas,” Mikesic said. “Two that I’m thinking about right now is being a news flash, so I’d wear a trench coat and then put a bunch of newspapers on under it, so then I’d flash people with news and yell ‘News flash!’ Another one I was thinking about is being General Electric. So then I’d combine a military uniform with various forms of electronics with a bunch of wires and everything.”

The inspiration for these costumes is as unique as the costumes themselves.

“I wanted to do something more than just wear plastic costumes from the store,” Mikesic said. “Part of the fun of going to Halloween parties and wearing a pun costume is to make people laugh.”

Whether one is in it for the candy, the fun or both, Halloween is ultimately a holiday where one can forget the generic costumes one wore as a child and break out of the mold with unique, innovative costumes.
