Greyhounds Win Districts

The Clayton Greyhound team defeated the John Burroughs Bombers 3-2 for a district championship win.

At pitcher, the game was started by sophomore Justin Gellman. Gellman gave way to senior Nick Stone after a two run first inning, and Stone pitched shutout baseball until the fifth inning when John Howard came in. Howard closed out the game, earning his second win of the district tournament.

The Greyhounds chipped away at a 2-0 Bombers lead. Alex Jasiek, the Burroughs pitcher, pitched six strong innings before the Greyhounds struck in the seventh. Senior Chris Daugherty drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game and senior Kidd Sutherlin saw 12 pitches before grounding a 3-2 Jasiek pitch to the Bombers third baseman which scored the winning run.

Howard made short work in the seventh, retiring the remaining Burroughs hitters in order.

After the game, the Greyhound team was thrilled.

“I can’t even explain the emotions that I feel right now, it feels so good,” junior Auggie Mense said.

Nate Gatter played first base and catcher during the game and credits the Greyhound pitchers for the win.

“Nick [Stone] battled to get us to the fifth inning, John came in- I don’t know how many pitches he’s thrown- he threw a complete game on Monday, to turn around on Wednesday, that’s unbelievable,” Gatter said.

The Greyhounds will play St. Mary’s on Tuesday.
