Olympus Has Fallen Review

The action film, Olympus Has Fallen, directed by Antoine Fuqua, revolves around a rogue former Secret Service agent (Gerard Butler) as he attempts to save the United States from a deadly terrorist plot.  Along with Butler, the outstanding cast includes Aaron Eckhart as President Benjamin Asher and Morgan Freeman as Speaker of the House.  Ashley Judd makes a brief appearance as the First Lady.

President Asher’s day starts out as normal; he picks out his tie in the morning and goes over his itinerary which includes a meeting with the South Korean Prime Minister.  However, unexpectedly, an armed plane enters Washington D.C. and wrecks havoc: murdering innocent civilians and destroying property.  Both leaders are sent to the White House Bunker, but all of a sudden, the Prime Minister’s bodyguards turn their guns on both leaders and take them hostage.

Throughout the movie, the viewer realizes the broader picture of the terrorist scheme as a North Korean communist plot against democracy.  With a deep seated hatred towards the United States and democratic South Korea, the North Korean terrorists who took both leaders hostage, seek to give North Korea the opportunity to invade South Korea and win the Korean War once and for all.

The film’s plot is exciting throughout and although the middle and end of the movie resembles a typical “one man army” action film, the viewer is fascinated by all the changes in the course the plot takes.  The film is given its R rating for a good reason.  The film is gory and contains mild language, but one could say that this is a necessity for a quality action film.  I would recommend this film to all those who are action buffs and enjoy listening to the voice of Morgan Freeman.
