Latin Club has been recently revived by Latin teacher Matthew Crutchfield. The club meets during Greyhound Time; however, their attendance varies from five members to 20, providing one obstacle to keeping up the momentum.
“There’s so much going on, and it doesn’t leave a lot of room for clubs,” junior Jonah Macanufo, a Latin Club member, said. “Especially during Greyhound Time, I could go to this club, but I’ve got this homework, and I[‘ve] got to meet with this teacher. It all adds up.”
While Macanufo is worried about his and many others’ attendance, he acknowledges that a club can succeed without many members. However he also believes having high attendance each week is beneficial to the club’s success.
“Consistent members are good because they are what the club is made of,” Macanufo said. “Members are who the club is meant for and why it exists. Consistent members create community.”
Even though the club poses challenges to both its advisor and the students who participate, Crutchfield believes those who show up benefit in many aspects of life, including future endeavors.
“Students who may not be able to be a leader in other clubs or in school can find a role,” Crutchfield said.
Specifically, they offer two of every position, including presidents, or Consuls, as well as a treasurers and a social media managers. The club also travels to Latin conventions where they take part in competitions ranging from poetry to tests of knowledge.
“The more you can get outside of the classroom [and] get involved with other schools and students, it makes you more connected, ” Crutchfield said.
While Macanufo enjoys a deeper understanding of the language and culture, he also believes Latin Club offers opportunities beyond the educational experience and provides a different environment than the class.
“I quite enjoy Latin as a class, but Latin Club gives you an opportunity to meet with people in other levels of Latin,” Macanufo said. “There’s less pressure when you don’t put a letter grade on something. You’re able to freely enjoy and get more out of it.”
